Pink Halloween Trick or Treat Porch Essentials

My porch went pink for Halloween. A light up pumpkin bucket, a ghost candy bowl with a bow, glowing pumpkin lights, little pink pumpkins and ghost treat bags for the trick or treaters. Sweet instead of scary.

Light the way to the candy

Trick or treaters show up at dusk, and a dark porch looks closed. So lighting comes first. The pink pumpkin LED string lights go along the porch rail, where kids can see them from the sidewalk.

Check the listing for whether your set plugs in or runs on batteries, because that decides where they can go. If you need an outlet, plan the run before you start. Wrap the strand around the rail a couple of times instead of letting it sag, so nobody catches it with a foot, a cape or a tail.

Once the lights are up, everything else just spreads out across the porch boards around them.

The bucket and the bowl

The pink light up pumpkin bucket works for little ones going door to door, and it works sitting on the steps as a second candy station. Check the listing for what batteries it takes and put fresh ones in the night before, not at six on Halloween.

The ghost candy bowl is ceramic, with a pink bow on the ghost's head and a scalloped bowl out front. I set it on a little white side table by the door so kids can reach it without climbing every step. Ceramic is heavier than plastic, which helps on a windy porch, but bring it inside at night so it does not get knocked over.

Fill the bowl with wrapped candy only, because little hands go in there all night and you want them taking a piece, not touching every piece. Refill from a bag you keep just inside the door. I keep the bucket next to the bowl so there are two places to grab from, which cuts down on the line at the table.

Pumpkins everywhere, on purpose

The twelve small pink faux pumpkins are the easiest part. Scatter them. A few by the steps, a cluster at the corner of the rail, two or three next to the table leg. Odd numbers in a group look natural, and faux pumpkins do not rot, so they can go out the first of October and stay put until the end.

The pink ghost cellophane treat bags come in a big pack of one hundred, with ties. You will not hand out a hundred on one night. The rest are for class parties, neighbor drop offs and the kid who shows up late after the bowl is empty.

My porch, the real life version

It was colder than I planned, so I threw a cream cable knit cardigan over a pink tee and jeans, put on pink sneakers and stood out there with a glitter cup the whole evening.

On a budget, buy the lights and the pumpkins first, because they change the look the most. Use any bowl you own for candy and save the ghost bowl for next year if you have to. Whatever you pick, keep the steps clear, keep cords out of walkways, and switch everything off once the last doorbell is done.

Anything in the photos that is not on the shopping list above is a styling extra, so use what you already own.
