Building the fairy from the middle out

Start with the hot pink glitter sequin tank top and the deep pink sparkle layered tulle skirt, because that is the outfit. Everything else is decoration. The tank has thin straps and an all over sequin front, and the skirt has an elastic waist with tiers of glittery tulle.

Sequins scratch. Not dramatically, but by hour three your underarms will have opinions. A thin camisole underneath solves it. For the skirt, check the size chart on the listing for both waist and length, since tulle skirts run anywhere from very mini to knee. Shorts underneath are a gift to your future self, especially on a windy night.

Wings, wand and flower crown

The pink fairy wings come with a matching glitter wand, and the wings are the sheer, swirly kind stretched over a wire frame. They slip on with elastic loops over your shoulders. The frames bend, so if a wing droops after a car ride, gently reshape it. Do not lean back in the car with them on. Lay them across the back seat instead, or ride with them on your lap like a very fragile passenger.

The flower crown headband sits best a little back from your hairline, where it frames your face. If headbands give you a headache after an hour, pin it in place so it can sit looser.

Makeup can lean shimmery. A pink highlight on the cheekbones, a little glitter on the inner corners and a glossy pink lip. For extra fairy, add a few tiny stick on gems along the cheekbone. They come off with a dab of oil at the end of the night.

Glitter flats for real walking

The glitter baby pink ballet flats are the comfort move. A brick path, a long street of houses, a backyard party on uneven grass, all doable. The glitter matches the sparkle in the skirt, so the whole look ties together without trying. They do shed a tiny bit of glitter at first. Everything in this costume sheds glitter. Accept it now.

If you will be out a long time, add a thin cushioned insole, because ballet flats are flat in the most literal sense. I walked that leaf covered path with a tumbler in one hand and the wand in the other, and my feet were fine. That is more than I can say about my last pair of costume heels.

Making the pieces earn their keep

Once the wings come off, the sequin tank works with jeans and a blazer for a birthday dinner or New Year's Eve. The flats go with almost anything pink, white or denim. The tulle skirt is more of a party piece, but it also makes a very good dress up skirt for a little one when you get tired of storing it.

To do this cheaper, use a pink camisole or any sparkly top you already own and keep the wings, wand and crown. That is enough. The leaf covered path in the photos looks like a storybook. Sadly I do not live on a path like that. My actual driveway has a basketball hoop and a recycling bin.

Anything in the photos that is not on the shopping list above is a styling extra, so use what you already own.
