The cat costume, done warm enough for actual trick or treating. A pink puff sleeve sweater dress with thigh high socks and glitter ears, and the dress keeps working long after the candy is gone.

A cat costume you can wear outside

The pink puff sleeve sweater dress is the whole idea here. It is a ribbed knit, fitted through the body, with big balloon sleeves that gather at the cuff. Ribbed knit hugs, so if you like some room, check the size chart on the listing and think about sizing up.

It is warm, which is the point. Trick or treating in a thin polyester costume with goosebumps stops being cute after the third house. The dress is short, so the socks are doing real work for coverage and warmth. Add sheer tights under the socks if your town gets properly cold by the end of October.

Ears, socks and flats

The pink glitter cat ears headband is all it takes to read as a cat. Thin band, sparkly ears, no bulk. A bobby pin on each side helps if you are walking a lot, or chasing small children between houses.

The white thigh high socks are the part people notice. Thigh highs roll down when they are too loose, so check the measurements on the listing and do a test walk around the house. A strip of body tape at the top stops slipping.

The white bow ballet flats keep you comfortable for hours. Flats on porch steps and sidewalks beat heels every single time. They are thin soled, though, so this is not the shoe for a muddy field. Stick to pavement and you will be fine all night. Your feet will thank you around house number forty.

Heart bag, earrings and the face

The light pink fluffy heart bag hangs on a long gold chain, and I wore it crossbody so my hands were free for a tumbler and, later, candy. It holds a phone, a lip gloss and a few fun size bars I definitely did not steal from the bowl. It is fuzzy, so keep it away from anything sticky. Caramel is the enemy.

The gold heart drop earrings are small enough to wear all night and show up nicely with a ponytail. For makeup, do a soft winged liner flicked up at the outer corner, a dot of pink on the tip of your nose and a few thin whiskers with brown liner. Five minutes, tops, and it washes off without a fight.

Wearing it again after October

Here is why I like this one so much. Take off the ears and the sweater dress is just a winter dress. Wear it with tall boots and tights in December and nobody will connect it to Halloween. The flats and earrings go back into normal life too.

Budget version. Any pink knit dress or long sweater works, and plain white over the knee socks from your drawer do the job. The ears are the only thing you truly need. The night I wore this, a neighbor kid told me I was the nicest cat she had ever met, and I am counting that as a career highlight.
