The Pink Suit Law Student Costume

The pink suit is the only costume that works at a party and in a meeting the week after. Hot pink, fitted, buttoned properly, with pearls and a velvet headband doing the heavy lifting. If you are going to be the law student in pink, commit to the suit.

The suit is the costume

If you only buy one thing for this look, buy the suit. That bright pink does all the costume work. Everything else just makes the point louder.

Button it. An open blazer looks like you came straight from work. A buttoned one looks like you are about to win an argument. The white top is not on the list, so a white tee or a thin white shell from your own closet is perfect.

Check the size chart on the listing and measure your waist and hips for the skirt, then your bust and shoulders for the blazer. If the set only comes in one size for both pieces, pick the size that fits the part of you that is harder to alter. A tailor can take in a skirt waist. Nobody can make shoulders bigger.

Pearls and a velvet headband

The classic faux pearl necklace sits right at the collarbone. Short and simple. It makes the outfit look polished instead of costume shop, and you will wear it again with every sweater you own.

The pink velvet padded headband is a puffy, rounded band, and it is the detail that tells people who you are before they see the rest. Wear it with your hair down and smooth, like I did, or with a sleek low ponytail. Push it back about an inch from your hairline so it sits up and shows off the padding.

For makeup, go polished. Pink lip, soft blush, a little mascara and brushed brows. Pink nails if you have time. Small things like that make people say you really committed, even though it took you twenty minutes.

Pumps, the bag and the laptop sleeve

The pink patent pointed toe stiletto pumps are a softer pink than the suit, which keeps the outfit from turning into one flat block of color. Patent is shiny and a little stiff at first, so wear them around the house with socks for an evening before the party. Check the size chart, and if you are between sizes, the half size up with a heel grip is easier.

The pink top handle satchel is the move. It looks like it is full of case files even when it is full of gum and a phone charger. Check the listing for the size and the strap details if you want to wear it on your shoulder later.

The baby pink 13 inch laptop sleeve is the funniest prop on the list because it is real. Carry it under your arm at the party like you just came from class. Afterward it actually protects a laptop, so check your laptop size against the listing before you buy.

Party on Saturday, meeting on Monday

This is the most comfortable fancy outfit I own. A blazer and a pencil skirt are made for sitting at a desk, so sitting on a couch at a party is no problem. Walking is fine too if the skirt has a slit or a vent at the back. Take smaller steps. The pumps will slow you down anyway.

If it is chilly, the blazer is enough for a quick walk from the car. If it is properly cold, wear a long coat over it and take it off at the door for the big reveal.

Then the week after, wear the blazer with jeans and the pearls to a meeting. Wear the skirt with a black sweater. Wear the headband to brunch. I meant it about committing to the suit. You are going to get a lot more than one night out of it.

Anything in the photos that is not on the shopping list above is a styling extra, so use what you already own.
