The Pink Halloween Edit

Pink Dorm Halloween Decor

Most dorms ban real candles and nails in the wall, which kills half of what Pinterest calls Halloween decor. This list works inside those rules: flameless tea lights, fairy lights, stick-on bats and soft things that pack flat in November.

Read the housing rules first

Read your housing rules before you buy anything. Most dorms say no open flames, no nails and nothing hanging from the sprinkler heads. That is why every piece here is soft, flameless or light enough to stick up without a hammer.

The good news is everything on this list packs flat, or close to it, so when November shows up you can shove it all into one bin under the bed. Your roommate will appreciate that. So will you on move out day, when you are carrying boxes down four flights because the elevator is broken again.

Start with the bed and work outward. Pillows and blanket first, because they cover the most space. Then lights. Then bats on the wall. Then mugs. If you only buy two things, buy the pillow covers and the blanket. They do the most work and you will actually use them every single day.

Pillows and a blanket that cover the most

The ghost pillow covers come as a set of two. These are covers, so you need inserts. Check the listing for the size and buy inserts to match, or use pillows you already have if they are close. A slightly overstuffed insert looks fuller and less floppy.

The throw blanket is pink with white ghosts and little black bats all over it. Fold it in thirds across the foot of your bed during the day. At night it becomes the blanket you wrap yourself in while you pretend to study and actually rewatch something for the fourth time.

The cream knit blanket and white pillows underneath everything are styling extras, not part of the list. If your bedding is the navy or gray set from the store, that is fine. Pink ghosts show up on almost anything. Wash the covers and the throw by the care tag, because dorm beds get used as couches by everyone who walks in.

Lights that will not get you written up

The flameless tea lights come in a twelve pack and they are pink, which is not a sentence I expected to love this much. On a desk or a windowsill they look like real candles from across the room, and nobody from housing will make you blow them out.

Check the listing for the battery type and grab a spare pack while you are at it. Twelve tea lights eat batteries, and there is no worse feeling than hunting for more at midnight on Halloween. Turn them off before you sleep. Flameless is safer, but leaving anything switched on all night under a blanket is still a bad idea.

The star fairy lights come as a six pack, pink stars on thin wire. In real life, drape them along a headboard, a shelf or a window frame with removable hooks. Keep them off your pillows and out from under the blanket, and switch them off when you leave the room.

Bats on the wall, ghosts in your mug

The 3D bat wall decor is a set of forty eight pink folded bats. On the wall, put them in a swoop above your bed or flying up from the corner of your desk. Use removable putty or whatever tape your dorm allows, and test one first so you do not peel off paint.

Forty eight is a lot of bats for one dorm room. Split them with your roommate, or do a cluster by the door so people walking down the hall get the joke. Bend the wings out a little before you stick them up. Flat bats look like stickers. Bent bats look like they are flying.

The ghost glass mugs come as a four pack, see through pink glass with little ghosts printed on them. Check the listing for care instructions before they go in a shared dishwasher, and keep two for yourself.

Anything in the photos that is not on the shopping list above is a styling extra, so use what you already own.
